A French citizen who illegally crossed the border with Russia with a rowing board from Estonia was put under a two -month detention, by a Court of Justice in the Leningrad Region. The man made a paddle from Estonia and was arrested on the banks of the Narva reservoir (designated by the Russian border) by border guards from the Federal Security Service. According to the court, the Frenchman said he wanted to settle in Russia. He also said that he has undergone psychiatric treatment in the past. A French diplomatic source said that the country’s consulate in St. Petersburg contacted the Russian authorities to ensure that this man received consular assistance, as defined by the Vienna Treaty. “The French authorities have been fully mobilized to provide the necessary assistance to our citizen,” said the source, who asked not to be named. The Reuters agency was not able to contact the arrested or lawyers. Source: RES
