In Germany, a Russian scientist was detained: suspected of working for the special services of the Russian Federation

In Germany, the scientist Ilnur N., a citizen of Russia, was detained. He is suspected of working for the special services of the Russian Federation, according to the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Germany.

 

As noted, the arrest warrant was issued on Friday, June 18 – on the same day the scientist was detained, searches were conducted at the place of work and residence.

According to the German Prosecutor General’s Office, N. Ilnur worked as a research assistant at the scientific and technical department in one of the universities in Germany.

In the period from October 2020 to June 2021, he met at least three times with an employee of the Russian special services, law enforcement officers note. In at least two of these meetings, he passed on university information for money.

Bellingcat investigator Hristo Grozev writes on Twitter that the detained Russian probably worked as an assistant at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Augsburg, and until 2013 worked at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Information about Dr. Ilnur Nagaev has not yet been deleted on the website of the University of Augsburg. His initials coincide with the name “Ilnur N.” published by the Prosecutor General’s Office of Germany.

The Prosecutor General’s Office notes that on June 19, Russian Ilnur N. appeared before the court in the first session.
