In Germany, they created bolts with an Internet connection: they will prevent accidents

It may sound a little strange, but the specialists of the German Fraunhofer University have officially presented their Smart Screw Connection to the world – they are equipped with a special module for connecting to the Internet. Accordingly, with the help of a special sensor, the smart bolt is able to control the fit density in the area of contact with the surface of any structure in real time. The pressure force is constantly transmitted via wireless Internet to the control panel, and in case of a loose fit, the smart bolt will send an alarm signal – this will prevent many accidents and simplify the process of technical inspection of large objects.

German university engineers even talked about how their latest system works. The bottom line is that at the base of the smart bolt there is a special thin film DiaForce, which registers the tension force at three points along the perimeter when the screw is tightened. And if in the future the magnitude of the force changes at one of the points due to the fact that the bolt is loose, the electrical resistance of the film will also change, informing the system about changes in tension. Moreover, the engineers even thought about how to make the bolts independent of electrical energy – for this, a smart device can be equipped with either a thermoelectric generator (which generates energy from the difference in temperature between the bolt head and the structure) or a compact solar battery.

It remains only to place a base station for connecting to the Internet within the range of the Smart Screw Connection radio transmitter so that the smart bolts can perform their task. The authors of the idea are confident that their invention will be in high demand at large facilities where it is necessary to frequently inspect bolted connections – we are talking about bridges, wind farms, storage facilities and more. Thanks to this notification system, specialists will not need to spend so much time on a full-fledged inspection of the facility.
