In his place again the policeman who shot from behind and killed the African-American Reysard Brooks

Atlanta Police Officer Garrett Rolfey, who was fired for shooting back and killing African-American Reyes Brooks, has been re-hired by Atlanta police.

As AMPE explains, a committee ruled that the proper procedure for his expulsion from the body was not followed.

The oversight body, the committee, said the Atlanta city authorities did not follow through on the procedure when Kisa Mayor Lance Bottoms fired Garrett Rolfe, a white man, without his case being heard. Rolfe shot 27-year-old Reysard Brooks in the back in June outside a Wendy’s restaurant.

Rolfe has been charged with murder, assault and other crimes, but has not yet been tried.

The city of Atlanta said in a statement that the police officer will take over only administrative duties.

Lance Botoms for her part defended her decision to expel Rolfe. “Given the sensitive situation in which our city and our country were last summer, the decision to expel this police officer, after fatally shooting Brooks in the back, was the right one,” she said in a statement.

The incident occurred on June 12, two weeks after the death of George Floyd during his violent arrest by a white police officer in Minneapolis, which escalated tensions across the United States and sparked violent protests against racism and police violence.

Police were called to Wendy’s restaurant after a complaint that Brooks had fallen asleep in his car drunk in the drive-through lane. After an argument, Brooks snatched the tazer of one of the officers, used it against them and then ran away, ignoring their orders to stop. He was shot twice in the back.

The supervisory body ruled that Rolfe was not given the opportunity to respond to the allegations that led to his dismissal.

Lance Loruso’s lawyer said his client was innocent “and now he has a chance to explain what happened”.

Gerald Griggs, vice president of the Atlanta branch of NAACP, America’s largest civil rights group, said Rolfe should never return to the streets. “He does not deserve to be a policeman in this city or in any other and we will protest, “he stressed.

About 30 protesters gathered outside Atlanta City Hall last night, many holding banners reading “Stop Police Killing,” “Justice for Reyes Brooks,” and “Imprison the Murderers Now.”
