UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced on Tuesday that he had come in contact with a case of SARS-CoV-2, an organization that now has symptoms of the disease caused by the virus, and that he would be isolated for a few days, according to diplomatic sources.
The 72-year-old Portuguese canceled his participation in all the events in which he planned to participate in life, the same sources added, speaking to the French Agency.
Tonight, Mr. Guterres was to be the guest of honor at the United Nations Correspondents Association at its annual Manhattan Gala. Tomorrow he will attend a Security Council meeting on the challenges of terrorism and climate change, chaired by Niger President Mohamed Bazoum.
Mr Bazoum, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council in December, arrived in New York earlier in the day, where he will remain until the end of the week when he travels to Washington.
The Secretary-General’s spokesman, Stefan Duzarik, declined to comment at this time. A few days ago, he announced that Mr. Guterres had recently received a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine, although he hesitated for a long time because millions of people around the world have not yet received the first dose.
