President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has five bilateral meetings with world leaders confirmed for June 14th and 15th, when he will be in Italy for the G7 Summit.
According to Itamaraty, the PT member will have meetings with Pope Francis; the presidents of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, of France, Emmanuel Macron; and from the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen; and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
Contrary to expectations, the ministry reported that, to date, there has been no request for a meeting with presidents Javier Milei, of Argentina, and Volodymyr Zelensky, of Ukraine.
This is Lula’s first trip to Europe this year. Among the issues to be addressed both at the G7 Summit and in meetings with leaders are the global tax of 2% on the income of the super-rich, a global alliance against hunger and the energy transition.
After the Summit session, on Friday afternoon (14), the Brazilian president will participate in a dinner hosted by the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni. He returns to Brazil on Saturday (15).
Stop in Geneva
Before going to Italy, Lula will stop in Geneva, Switzerland, for the launch event of the Global Coalition for Social Justice, of which he will be co-president.
The PT member will give the opening speech at the ceremony which, part of the annual forum of the International Labor Organization (ILO), will take place on Thursday (13).
G7 Summit
This year, the Summit takes place in Borgo Egnazia, Italy. Lula is going at the invitation of the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
It is the eighth time that the PT member has participated in the G7 meeting, a group made up of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union.
The event will be attended by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and King Abdullah of Jordan, who are expected to emphasize their concern about the situation in the Middle East.
Volodymyr Zelensky will also be present on the 13th, in a session dedicated to discussing the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Another highlight is the presence of Pope Francis, the first pontiff to participate in a group summit.
