According to one of the archaeologists Francesco Giancola, the head was found during the restoration of an ancient wall that collapsed during heavy downpours in 2013.

“I saw that the earth changed color. We continued to dig and a piece of marble appeared. I immediately saw that it was a head belonging to the statue of Augustus – I recognized it by its hair, shape and cut of the eyes,” said Giancola.

The height of the head is 35 cm, and the date of its creation is between 20 BC. and 10 A.D. Scientists suggest that the head was separated from the statue at a distance of about two meters, and the same marble was used for its manufacture, with which the sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti later worked.
