The leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Friedrich Mertz, who went to Ukraine at the invitation of the Ukrainian parliament, is meeting today in Kyiv with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and other government and parliamentary officials of the country.
Tonight, Mr. Mertz is expected to meet with the mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, with whom he will give a press conference.
During the German politician’s stay in the Ukrainian capital, alarm bells for an air strike sounded for the first time in the last three days, Ukrainian media reported, according to Focus magazine.
Before arriving in Kyiv, Mr. Mertz visited the Irpin region and said he was shocked by the victims of the Russian attacks there. “The mayor of the city described to me in very dramatic words what happened here, who should be mourned, but also what amazing military successes were achieved,” said the German Christian Democrat, adding that “in Germany we have a duty to help this country and especially cities like Irpin to be rebuilt. ”
On the Ukrainian side, President λÎelensky’s financial adviser welcomed the Mets’s visit, but also hoped that Chancellor Olaf Soltz would visit Kyiv. Last night, Mr. Soltz referred to the recent exclusion of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier from a planned visit to Ukraine, as an “obstacle” to a possible visit of his own.
