In less than 1 h, 2 latam planes are collision with birds in Guarulhos

Two latam planes were hit by birds on Saturday morning (5) during a landing procedure at Guarulhos airport, Greater São Paulo. According to the company, the incidents occurred within 50 minutes.

The company did not say which flights affected planes made, but stressed that “aircraft landed in total safety, but episodes like these have great impacts throughout the operation.”

The company drew attention to the “high incidence” of Bird Strikes – as aviation is known in the occurrences of shock between airplanes and birds – in Brazil. According to Latam, this “ends up harming many passengers with canceled or late flights, as well as causing additional costs with repairs and maintenance of aircraft, out -of -operation engines and eventual reserve crew scale.”

This year alone, until April 1, 55 cases of Bird Strikes were recorded in the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention System (Sipaer), a tool of the Aeronautical Accident Investigation and Prevention Center (Cenipa). There were no victims in any of these occurrences.

Throughout last year, Sipaer counted 927 cases of Bird Strikes – a 24.3% increase in comparison with the previous year, when 746 episodes were recorded. In the two years, there were only two cases of incidents with victims. The injuries were light, as stated in the report.

LATAM says that from the cases occurred in 2014 in Brazil, 513 involved flights from the company. “The sector has warned of the need for efficient fauna management by the municipalities and airport administrators near Brazilian airports,” says the company.
