In less than 24 hours, two cases of animal abandonment were detected in DF

Two cases of dog abandonment were recorded in the Federal District in less than 24 hours, both caught on security cameras. Last Monday (13), puppies were abandoned in front of a pet shop in Águas Claras and last Sunday (12), a dog and her puppies were left on a street in Ceilândia.

On Monday night (13), two people were caught abandoning five puppies in front of a pet shop in the Águas Claras Economic Development Area (ADE). See below:

The owner of the establishment, Donizete Messias, 39 years old, reported what happened to CNN : “They left the puppies around midnight and I only noticed when I opened the store, at seven in the morning. This is the first time this has happened, as the store is only three months old. In my experience, they should be no more than forty days old.”

Donizete said that he had already adopted a stray dog, and expressed his inability to keep the puppies.

Now he worries about finding responsible homes for them. “No one has adopted it yet”, he laments.

The other case occurred last Sunday (12), in Ceilândia, where a couple was filmed abandoning a dog and her four puppies on a road located in the Productive Enterprise Support Program (Pró-DF).

The animals were rescued by Jeniffer Mayara, 36 years old, who was very happy that the dogs were adopted by a family last Tuesday (14). See below:

Abandonment is a Crime:

None of the cases were taken to the police, however the abandonment of animals is considered a crime of mistreatment, provided for in Law No. 9,605/98 (Environmental Crimes Law), with a prison sentence of three months to one year and a fine.

The penalty is increased by one-sixth to one-third if the crime causes the death of the animal.
