In less than a year, 55 children and teenagers were shot in the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, according to a survey by the Fogo Cruzado Institute, released this Friday (6).
Among the victims, 19 were killed and 36 were injured. According to the Institute, the data was recorded between January 1st of this year and this Friday.
The study points out that, among the total number of people shot, 21 were children – of which three died -, and 34 were teenagers – of which 16 were killed.
This year’s total represents a number approximately 16% lower compared to the total number of minors shot in the same period in 2023.
Last year, the total reached 66 children and teenagers shot, of which 31 died. According to the Child and Adolescent Statute, children are considered to be people between 0 and 11 years old. People between the ages of 12 and 17 are considered teenagers.
Teenager killed in confrontation
Last Thursday night (5), Kamila Vitória Aparecida de Sousa Silva, aged 12, died after being shot during a confrontation between criminals in Favela do Guarda, in Del Castilho, in the north of Rio de Janeiro.
According to the Civil Police, the victim’s family said that the girl was on a soccer court when she was shot during a confrontation between criminals. Information from the Fogo Cruzado Institute, which monitors shooting incidents in Greater Rio, indicates that people who were in a car shot towards the square and fled.
The girl was hit in the leg and taken to the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, in Méier, where she underwent surgery, but did not survive. The Municipal Health Department confirmed the death.
Kamila’s wake will take place this Saturday afternoon (7), at the Inhaúma Cemetery, in the north of the state.
According to information from the Military Police, the region was the scene of a confrontation between members of rival gangs. When the police arrived at the scene, there was no presence of criminals within the community.
