In meeting with Taiwan president, Pelosi says US ‘will not abandon’ island

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wanted to make “unambiguously clear” that the US will not abandon Taiwan in a speech at the presidential office in Taipei.

“Today, our delegation came to Taiwan to make it unequivocally clear that we will not abandon our commitment to Taiwan and we are proud of our enduring friendship,” Pelosi said, alongside President Tsai Ing-wen, after receiving Taiwan’s highest civilian honor.

“Now more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is crucial and that is the message we are bringing here today,” she said. “I look forward to displaying this honor in the (House) Presidential Office, or using it on Capitol Hill as a symbol of our precious friendship,” Pelosi said of the civil honor.

The island’s president thanked Pelosi for her visit and said Taipei would do “whatever it takes” to strengthen its capacity for self-defense.

“Facing deliberately heightened military threats, Taiwan will not back down. We will firmly defend our nation’s sovereignty and continue to uphold the line of defense of democracy,” Tsai said at the presidential office.

“At the same time, we wish to cooperate and work in unity with all democracies around the world to jointly safeguard democratic values.”

Tsai said she was committed to “maintaining peace and stability” in the Taiwan Strait and vowed to make the island a “key stabilizing force” for regional security and the development of global trade.

She thanked Pelosi for “expressing the consistent US policy of supporting Taiwan’s self-defense” and hailed her as one of the democratic island’s “most devoted friends.”

“Taiwan is a trusted and trusted cooperative partner of the US. We will continue to work with the US Congress, as well as the government, to strengthen cooperation in areas such as Indo-Pacific security, economic development, talent cultivation, and supply chains to further elevate our relationships,” he added. .
