In Milan, smoking outside within 10 meters of someone will be penalized

Nonchalantly sending its volute of smoke at the place of an onlooker will soon cost the Milanese dearly. The capital of Lombardy is indeed going to prohibit its inhabitants from smoking within ten meters of a passer-by in public places from January 19, 2021, as reported by our colleagues from HuffPost, Sunday January 3. This anti-smoking measure particularly concerns large squares, stadiums, parks, cemeteries and bus stops. And this is just a taste of what awaits die-hard smokers: smoking will be completely banned outside in 2025.

This war on cigarettes was launched as part of an action plan against pollution enacted in November 2020 by the City Council on the initiative of the mayor of Milan Beppe Sala, from the Democratic Party. However, the capital of Lombardy wishes at least to reduce the level of harmful particles released by cigarettes into the air and at best to curb smoking among its population.

Pizzaiolos in the sights

Smokers are not the only ones targeted by this action plan. Thus, stores will no longer be able to keep their doors open continuously from 2022 and diesel boilers will be banned the same year, lists the HuffPost. The Pizzaiolos are also in the sights of the municipality: they will soon have to use only a certain type of fuel, less polluting, to power their wood-fired ovens.
