The Municipality of Milan together with Ats, Areu and the Lombardy Region have launched the “on the road” initiative to arrange the vaccine for the homeless. The goal is to be able to reach those who have chosen to live on the street, remaining on the sidelines of the vaccination campaign and prevent them from getting sick.
It will start immediately with two days of experimentation. Three campers will be used, in San Babila square and in Central stations e Garibaldi, and 19 mobile units headed by the Sammartini center.
Johnson & Johnson will be used because of the single dose and therefore easier to administer.
The initiative will then resume after 20 August. Doctors and nurses will collect informed consent, distributed in Italian, English, French, Arabic and Romanian and then deliver the certificate of the vaccination.
“After two months of administering doses to two thousand people in public dormitories and soup kitchens, now it is necessary to trace the people of the diehards of the street, another two thousand people”, he explains Thea Scognamiglio, Areu medical director, the person in charge of vaccinations for the Milanese homeless, in an interview with Repubblica.
«They are people who have a very fluid life, unpredictable in their movements, you have to go and look for them one by one. And we will, because no one has to get sick this winterHe adds.
At the moment the project is identifying the places of the homeless, thanks to the work of the mobile units of various associations, such as the Volunteer Doctors, Progetto Arca, the Cisom of the Knights of the Order of Malta who help to track and then vaccinate people. .
An operation that is not at all simple, explains Scognamiglio: «The difficulty is summer, a season in which they are very dispersed. You have to go and look for them one by one, take them to the campers, do the medical history. There are so many variables in the days of a homeless person and a widespread operation is needed to reach them all ».
What’s more, it’s not easy to convince them either: «You have to know how to establish the relationship, explain what it is about. Never force, but try to reach consensus by giving the right information. We are now in the pilot phase with small numbers but the idea is to vaccinate as many people as possible».
