At all stations of the Moscow metro, fare payments through the Face Pay face recognition system have been earned today, as reported by several sources at once.
Moscow became the first city in the world where the system started working on such a scale, as said by Deputy Mayor for Transport Maxim Liksutov. At the same time, using the service is voluntary, this is just another way to pay for travel.
To use the service, you need to attach a photo, bank card and Troika transport card in the Moscow Metro application. After this procedure, the system is ready for operation: a person approaches the turnstile and looks at the camera, which identifies him, and the fare is debited from the participant’s card. The Face Pay payment system assumes that the passenger’s face photo is automatically translated into an encrypted biometric key. Such keys are processed on secure servers in accordance with the law on the storage and processing of personal data.

The installation of video surveillance cameras with the ability to recognize faces in the Moscow metro began in the spring of 2019. Experts have already expressed concerns that Face Pay will create an entire database of citizens, as is done in China.
The face recognition system was launched in Moscow in 2017. According to official data, about 200,000 devices have been installed in the city today.
