To open the agenda of appointments in Russia, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) visited, this Wednesday morning (16), a monument that honors Russian soldiers killed during World War II, known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.
Bolsonaro, who arrived in Moscow on Tuesday (15), walked from the hotel where he is staying to the monument, located in the Alexandre Garden, close to the Kremlin.
Moscow’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers was opened in 1969, when Russia was still known as the Soviet Union, and marked the 25th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi troops near Moscow.
On the site are the remains of a soldier killed in 1941 during the Battle of Stalingrad, in which the Soviets defeated German troops during a severe winter.
The ceremony featured the laying of a wreath and a Russian military procession at the venue. In addition to the president, Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy, Carlos França, of Foreign Affairs; Walter Braga Netto, from Defense; Luiz Eduardo Ramos, from the General Secretariat of the Presidency; and Augusto Heleno, from the Institutional Security Office.
After the tributes, Bolsonaro walked to the Kremlin, seat of the Russian government, for his meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
Soon after meeting with Putin, Bolsonaro said that Brazil was “in solidarity with Russia” and that both countries had “a lot to collaborate on”, citing themes of defense, oil and gas and agriculture.
“I’m sure that even this passage through here gives a picture to the world that we can grow a lot with our bilateral relations”, said the Brazilian president, who also thanked Putin for the pardon granted to Robson Oliveira – driver of Brazilian player Fernando Martins. who was arrested in Russia after transporting a drug illegal in the country, but legal in Brazil.
A lunch between the two leaders was planned, as well as a joint statement after the meeting.
Bolsonaro’s trip to Russia was even questioned by government ministers for taking place at a sensitive time for the region’s geopolitics: Russia is accused by member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) of organizing to attack Ukraine; the country denies the intentions, but demands that the United States and allies limit military actions together with the Ukrainians.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, said in the morning (Russian local time) that the agenda would “certainly” enter the conversation of both, but that the Brazilian position would be to seek a path through a peaceful solution of the talks.
Until then, the information was that the Brazilian government would not deal with this matter, said the CNN to Russia, Mathias Brotero.
