The new movie “Ghostbusters” is a family affair on and off screen, as screenwriter and director Jason Reitman is introducing his father’s franchise to a new generation.
Jason said that he had had the characters from “Ghostbusters – Beyond” in his mind for a long time and that when he presented the idea to Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films, his father cried.
“One day I knew what the end of the movie would be, and that’s how I know I’m going to do something,” Jason said at the movie’s New York premiere on Monday night. “I knew it was time.”
In the new title, we see a single mother played by Carrie Coon moving with her two children to a small town to reconnect with the side of the family of the father, from whom she has estranged. They end up discovering things they could never have imagined.
The original “Ghostbusters,” Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson, are back in their uniforms and said they rejoiced in the experience.
“I felt called from the reserve to go back to work, show up and take care of things,” said Aykroyd.
Coon highlighted the elements of female empowerment and love in the film.
“I love that the center of our story is a little nerdy scientist girl. I think this is a wonderful invitation for the future,” he said.
