In October, electricity consumption had its first reduction in 2021. According to the Energy Research Company (EPE), the decline was 0.5% compared to the same month last year.
The information was published in the Monthly Review of the Electric Energy Market, a document prepared by the state-owned company.
However, even with the reduction, October was still the second highest consumption month of 2021 to date. In the 12-month period, the expansion of electricity use is 5.1% when compared to the previous period.
The main reason for the downturn in the tenth month was residential consumption, which fell 4.4%. It was the only segment where there was a low.
The explanation for the phenomenon was the same as the one presented the day before by the National Electric System Observatory (ONS) for the 3.4% reduction in the country’s electrical load in the same period: the record of lower temperatures than expected in the Center- West, Southeast and South.
The industrial segment, the largest energy consumer, increased by 1.7%. In volume, it was the biggest demand for the month since 2014.
The numbers were driven by metallurgy in the Southeast and North, by the chemical sector, in the Northeast, and by mining, again in the Southeast. Among the ten most electro-intensive sectors, that is, those that demand more energy, there was an increase in consumption in seven.
In the distribution of industrial consumption by states, the greatest increase occurred in Alagoas (121.3%), followed by Espírito Santo (20.9%).
The publication also highlights that the good performance of the services sector in the economic recovery is one of the reasons for the increase in commercial consumption.
The segment has been particularly benefited by the advance of vaccination against Covid-19, which has mainly helped the services provided to families, especially in relation to the areas of accommodation and food.
