In one of her latest appearances on social media, singer Gal Costa, an icon of Brazilian popular music, declared her vote for Lula by making the L.

The artist posted a video, in which she says nothing, but makes the L for Lula in front of the camera. The video was posted on her Instagram feed, which has more than 760,000 followers, on October 30, the day of the second round of the presidential elections. 12 hours ago, the singer had reposted the same video in her stories.

“Love conquered hate. Lula president”, wrote the singer on the 30th. Gal died this Wednesday (9) at the age of 77. The information was confirmed by the artist’s press office to CNN 🇧🇷 The cause of death was not reported.

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) commented on the death on social media and stated that she was “one of the greatest singers in the world”.

“Gal Costa was one of the greatest singers in the world, one of our main artists to take the name and sounds of Brazil to the entire planet. His talent, technique and daring enriched and renewed our culture, rocked and marked the lives of millions of Brazilians,” Lula wrote. Other politicians also mourned the artist’s death.

Gal Costa would perform at the Primavera Sound festival in São Paulo, which took place last weekend. Participation was canceled on the eve of the event. His last participation in festivals was at the Coalla Festival, in September this year in São Paulo.

According to the press release, the singer had been recovering in the last three weeks from a nasal surgical procedure.

Gilberto Gil, one of his companions from the “Doces Bárbaros”, posted on his Twitter profile about his friend’s death.

“Very sad and impacted by the death of my sister from Rio Grande do Sul, Gal Costa”. The last video posted by the artist was a 1986 performance singing “Sorte”, a song by Ronaldo Bastos and Celso Fonseca.

From the beginning of her career, the singer took a political stand.

She re-recorded “Brasil, show your face”, by Cazuza, in 1988. The song became nationally known when it was part of the opening of the soap opera “Vale Tudo”, on TV Globo.

The artist had shows scheduled for November, December, January and March of the next year. The concert on December 17, at Sala São Paulo, was sold out, according to the singer’s website.
