The number of people in shelters due to the rains in Rio Grande do Sul fell by 27.7% in one week. From the 18th until this Saturday (25th), 21,411 individuals left the temporary structures serving the homeless and homeless. The data comes from the Civil Defense daily bulletins and was compiled by CNN .
The Social Development Secretariat of Rio Grande do Sul explained that the daily monitoring of shelters is based on information provided by the municipalities. “When the water goes down, there is a natural movement for families to return to their homes, as at this moment”, explained the ministry.

This Saturday morning, 55,791 people were still in shelters across the state. A week ago, there were 77,202. The maximum number of people housed was reached on May 12: 81,170.
In the first bulletin issued by Civil Defense, on May 1st, 1,145 were in shelters. From then until the 12th, the number rose daily. Between the 14th and 20th, there was a stabilization, until it entered a downward trend last Tuesday (21st).
Currently, the state has 581,638 homeless people. Not everyone went to shelters, as there are people who went to the homes of friends or relatives.
Unlike the number of people in shelters, the total number of homeless people is not yet showing a downward trend. On Monday (20), for example, 581,633 people were homeless – five less than the current number.
Search Atlas/CNN released this week shows that 41.7% of people affected by the flood in Rio Grande do Sul had to leave their homes and temporarily go elsewhere.
This week, the government of Rio Grande do Sul issued an order to begin construction of the first 300 permanent housing units for the homeless in Vale do Taquari.
Another ongoing project is the construction of so-called temporary cities, which will operate in four cities in the metropolitan region: Porto Alegre, Canoas, Guaíba and São Leopoldo.
According to vice-governor Gabriel Souza, these spaces are “more suitable, but temporary, places so that, for a while, people can be accommodated in places with more dignity and comfort for themselves and their families”.
Until this morning, the rains in Rio Grande do Sul left 469 dead, 64 missing and 806 injured.
