From January 2023 to January 1st of this year, 1,256 Brazilian municipalities were recognized in a state of emergency by the Ministry of Regional Integration and Development (MIDR) only for natural disasters linked to storms, according to a survey carried out by CNN .
Between floods, cyclones, landslides, floods, floods and storms, 45 million 251 thousand people were affected and 114 deaths were recorded. Around 2,500 people were injured and more than 75,000 were left homeless. 22,502 people disappeared in the disasters.
During the period, 6,000 homes were destroyed and around 240,000 damaged in 23 states across the country. Only until this Sunday (14), 54 municipalities were recognized as having a storm emergency, according to the National Civil Protection and Defense System (Sinpdec).
From 1916 until this year, Brazil has already suffered public losses of around R$852.74 billion due to natural disasters of all types.
In the state of Rio de Janeiro alone, 19 municipalities were recognized as being in emergency, impacting 1 million and 896 thousand inhabitants. In the state, 52 homes were destroyed and more than 14 million were damaged — more than 1,425 people were left homeless. Eight deaths were recorded and 37 people were injured.
Storms in Rio de Janeiro
According to the State Secretariat for Civil Defense (Sedec-RJ) and the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CBMERJ), on Sunday night, 11 deaths were confirmed in the state due to the storms.
The corporation has already carried out 268 rain-related rescues in the last 24 hours: 118 in Rio de Janeiro, 79 in Belford Roxo, 45 in Nova Iguaçu, eleven in Mesquita, seven in Nilópolis, four in São João de Meriti, then in Seropédica and in Duke of Caxias.
