A question to the Minister of Health about the obstacles placed by EOPYY in the access of patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus to new medical technological products, submitted today by 34 MPs of the SYRIZA-PS at the initiative of the head of the health sector Andreas Xanthou.
In their question, the MPs refer to the official complaints of the associations of patients with diabetes (Hellenic Diabetes Federation – ELODI, Diabetics Association of Athens – SYDA), according to which the changes in the pricing of consumables provided for in a recent gazette (8/8/2022) and in particular in the compensation of glucose recording sensors connected to continuous insulin infusion pumps, will lead to problems in the distribution of these products in the Greek market and, consequently, in a huge reversal of the standards of good monitoring and regulation of thousands of patients with insulin-dependent DM. The arbitrary, level-headed and unscientifically substantiated change in EOPYY’s reimbursement policy in relation to these innovative products has caused great consternation in the country’s diabetic community, who are justifiably concerned that their access to technological developments affecting the effectiveness of their treatment and their quality of life.
SYRIZA-PS MPs ask the Minister of Health if:
– Has he been informed about the issue that has arisen and its side effects in the daily life of thousands of type 1 diabetics, especially young children?
– Will he request a review of the decision of the EOPYY on the compensation of the specific consumables, after prior consultation with the scientific community and diabetic associations?
– Will it ensure the continuation of free access to new medical technology products and necessary consumables for those type 1 diabetics who have a medical indication for it, through the negotiation of sustainable prices with the supplier companies and the strengthening of the closed budgets of the EOPYY?
– Will there be provision for free coverage for all uninsured diabetics of the necessary consumables related to the measurement and good regulation of blood glucose?
The question in detail:
To the Minister of Health
SUBJECT: EOPYY puts obstacles in the access of patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus to new medical technology products that ensure good regulation and quality of life
A few days ago (8/8/2022) the decision of the EOPYY was published in the Official Gazette (Sheet No. 4204) on the compensation of new medical technology products related to the therapeutic care of patients with type 1 diabetes. According to official complaints from patient associations (Hellenic Federation Diabetes – ELODI, Diabetics Association of Athens-SYDA), the changes in the pricing of consumables provided for in the Official Gazette and in particular in the compensation of the continuous glucose recording sensors connected to continuous insulin infusion pumps, will lead to problems in the distribution of these products in the Greek market and, consequently, in a huge reversal of the standards of good monitoring and management of thousands of patients with insulin-dependent DM.
– Because the therapeutic benefit of good regulation of type 1 DM patients through the new systems of glucose recording and continuous insulin infusion is fully documented and indisputable, as the risk of severe hypoglycemic episodes and hyperglycemic states is minimized.
– Because it is the obligation of the State and specifically of the EOPYY to cover to the maximum extent possible the modern therapeutic needs of patients with serious chronic diseases such as Type 1 DM.
– Because it is an investment in Public Health to protect diabetic patients from multisystemic complications of the disease through optimal regulation of blood glucose.
– Because diabetologists consider insulin pumps in combination with continuous measurement sensors to be the world’s most effective tool in the management and care of patients with type 1 DM.
– Because with the recent decision of the EOPYY on the pricing of new medical technology products for type 1 DM and in particular the continuous glucose recording sensors that are connected to insulin infusion pumps, a condition is created either of the unavailability of the necessary consumables on the market or the passing on of their costs in the pockets of citizens.
