In poor health, Queen Elizabeth will not attend Easter event

Queen Elizabeth will not participate in Maundy Service next week, when the monarch usually hands out coins to retirees in an age-old tradition before Easter. The monarch has been suffering some problems with her mobility.

Elizabeth, who turns 96 later this month, will be represented by her son and heir, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, in worship on Thursday at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

A palace source said the queen had not committed to attending and did not want her absence to overshadow the occasion and for those in attendance to be made aware in advance.

The monarch has been forced to cut back on appointments since being hospitalized for one night last October for an unspecified illness and then being ordered to rest by her doctors.

Last month, she made her first public appearance in months at a memorial service for her late husband Prince Philip, where she used a cane, having joked at an engagement in February that she couldn’t move much.

However, she continued to perform regular duties virtually, holding two audiences with foreign ambassadors via video link on Thursday.
