In prison for five years man who “insulted” the king of Morocco

A man in Morocco has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of “insulting the king” and “undermining the monarchy”. Abderrahman Zanqand, a member of Al Anld Wal Ihsan – an outlawed movement but whose existence is tolerated by the authorities – was convicted after postings on Facebook that “denounced the normalization of relations with Israel and the positions of Arab leaders” for the war in Gaza, including a post titled “commander of the faithful” about King Mohammed VI, his lawyer, El Hassan Essoni, told AFP. The 48-year-old activist, who will appeal the conviction, told the court that “he was not specifically referring to the king of Morocco but to the leaders of the Arab countries neighboring Palestine,” Essoni added.
