In remission, “Jurassic Park” actor says cancer treatment may stop working

Sam Neill, known for playing Alan Grant in the “Jurassic Park” film franchise, spoke in a new interview about his routine for treating his cancer.

The actor, born in Ireland, was diagnosed with stage three T-cell angioimmunoblastic lymphoma, in March 2022. In a conversation for the documentary series “Australian Story”, on ABC, the Australian TV network, Neill says that he has been in remission for 12 months with the help of a rare anti-cancer drug that requires infusions every two weeks.

Neill initially tried a round of chemotherapy, which left him quite weak. “I looked in the mirror and it wasn’t a pretty sight. I was stripped of any kind of dignity,” he says.

The treatment, however, had no effect, and the cancer continued. His doctor says she was surprised by the aggressiveness of the disease.

Regarding the treatment, Neill compares it to a fight with a boxer, but even if it leaves him “finished”, it is what is keeping him alive and he will have to do this routine for the rest of his life.

His son says that with treatment, Neill is able to maintain his work routine 90% of the time. “In fact, the idea of retiring fills me with terror,” says the actor. “Not being able to do the things you love would be heartbreaking.”

Neill says he needs to be realistic, as the treatment will stop working at some point. Orly Lavee, the actor’s hematologist, told “Australian Story” that it may be necessary to think about a third treatment alternative when this happens.

“I’m prepared for this,” he says in the interview. “And I think I did some good things. Not all, but I think I can live with that. And die from it too.”
