The head of NATO — the Western military alliance —, Jens Stoltenberg, said this Monday (11) that he disagrees with Pope Francis' comments that Ukraine should have the “courage of the white flag” and negotiate an end to the war triggered by invasion of Russia.
Asked about the pope's remarks, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization told Reuters: “If we want a negotiated, peaceful and lasting solution, the way to get there is to provide military support to Ukraine.”
In the interview, he also distanced himself from French President Emmanuel Macron's statement that Western allies should not rule out sending troops to Ukraine.
Stoltenberg stressed that even if NATO countries sent troops individually to Ukraine, this would affect the alliance as a whole, since its members are bound by a collective defense pact.
The secretary general's statements came in an interview with Reuters given at NATO headquarters, after a flag-raising ceremony to mark Sweden's accession to the military alliance.
