Rio de Janeiro Police arrested a bus driver accused of purposely running over, dragging and killing a 58-year-old firefighter on New Year’s Eve.
The driver was charged with intentional homicide, which is when there is intent to kill. The victim was run over on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, which is one of the main thoroughfares in the neighborhood, during the New Year celebration.
This hit-and-run happened at around 5:15 am on January 1st, shortly after the reopening of the road to traffic, as the avenue was closed overnight because of the New Year’s Eve party. The reopening took place around 5 pm.
Images published on social networks show that the victim was standing in front of the bus, preventing the passage of the collective. The bus driver accelerated, knocked the man down and ended up dragging the victim.
The 58-year-old man died at the scene. The case began to be investigated by the Civil Police as an accident. But after analyzing security camera footage and taking witness statements, it was concluded that the driver took the risk of killing the victim when he accelerated the vehicle.
