In Rio, passengers from the subway receive 2,500 books in action from the Biennial

In the morning rush, amid hasty steps and distracted glances, a surprise brought lightness to the journey of the cariocas. This Tuesday (20), passengers of the subway embarked with stories in their hands and followed their journeys towards work and other commitments.

With pages full of adventures, novels, classics and children’s narratives, 2,500 books were distributed free of charge in strategic stations – of greater flow – such as Pavuna, Uruguay, Botafogo and Oceanic Garden. The initiative brought together dozens of publishers, mobilized by the National Book Editors Union (Snel) and GL events exhibitions, organizer of the Rio Book Biennial. The action is part of the 4th edition of the project “Embark on Reading”, a partnership between Biennial and Metrôrio.

The simple gesture – to test a book – represented, for many, an invitation to reunion with reading amid the busy daily life.

“I found the initiative very cool to encourage reading. I intend to read the book I won during the trip, between one station and another. I found it very interesting,” said Debora Silveira, a 28 -year -old nurse, who received a copy during her morning journey.

For project organizers, the proposal goes beyond symbolism: seeks to insert literature into everyday life outside the traditional spaces. “Reading is a powerful tool for social transformation, and actions such as this reinforces our commitment to bring people’s book closer, democratizing access and valuing culture,” says Dante Cid, president of Snel.

Tatiana Zaccaro, director of GL Events Exhibitions, points out that the project also anticipates the experience of the Rio 2025 book Biennial, which promises to be the largest in history. “To bring books into the subway is to bring stories to people’s real life. We want to show that there are several ways to insert reading into the routine, and that it can make our journeys lighter,” he says.

“The action is an incentive for habit and democratization of access to reading. It also represents the opportunity to offer a different experience to our customers, especially this year where Rio de Janeiro celebrates the title of world capital of the book, granted by UNESCO,” recalls Simone Pfeil, commercial and marketing manager of subway.

The distribution of books also marks the beginning of the city’s movement to the Biennial, which takes place from June 13 to 22, in Riocentro. This year, the event brings the unprecedented concept of Book Park – an immersive and interactive literary park, which promises to delight audiences of all ages, with more than 300 confirmed authors and 200 hours of content.
