It is a good time for art in Europe. A few days after the magnificent Munch Museum in Oslo, the news of another grand opening arrives, this time in Rotterdam: in the Museumpark of the Dutch city on 6 November opens the Boijmans Van Beuningen depot, the largest art repository open to the public in the world. A space never seen before born to show us what is behind the scenes of a museum.
In Boijmans Van Beuningen depot it will be possible to admire all the works kept so far away from the eyes of the admirers of the neighbor’s collections Boijmans Van Beuningen, which is the largest museum in the city, with masterpieces ranging from medieval European to modern art (and which is now temporarily closed for restoration). As happens to all the great museums in the world, which for reasons of space can exhibit a minimum percentage of their collections ranging from 6 to 10%, even the Boijmans Van Beuningen so far it has had to limit its exhibitions, but in Rotterdam they have decided to reverse the route. Thus was born his “deposit”: a never seen artistic container, different in terms of use and display, which also stands out in the skyline of the city for its design.
Designed by the renowned architecture firm MVRDV under the guidance of the co-founder The fault of the Maas, the Depot has an unprecedented ovoid shape with a roof wider than the base and is completely mirrored, consisting of 6,609 square meters of glass divided into 1,664 panels reflecting the landscape, arranged on a height of 39 meters.
Inside it keeps 151 thousand works, for some of which it is also possible to attend the conservation and restoration operations but – and this is another substantial difference compared to a traditional museum – they are not arranged by theme or by era or style: they are distributed in fourteen storage spaces according to the degree of temperature and humidity they need to be stored. Some, then, are hung, while high are in the window. In conclusion, the invitation is to get lost, admire, scrutinize, to be carried away by art without superstructures.
At the end of the tour the roof where is also worth a stop there is a hanging garden with 75 birches and 25 firs from which to admire the skyline, an event space and a gourmet restaurant.
