In Russia and the EAEU countries, the privileges on the import of electric vehicles will be canceled

Starting next year, in Russia and other countries that are part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), benefits for electric vehicles will be canceled. The corresponding project has already been prepared by the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

We are talking about the cancellation of the benefits introduced in the spring of 2020 on the import of electric vehicles into the territory of the EAEU. The EEC plans to impose a 15 percent customs duty on electric vehicles imported to Russia from 2022, as well as cars with internal combustion engines. It is worth noting here that none of the member countries of the Union received any initiative proposals regarding the extension of the zero rate on the import of electric vehicles. But the need to extend the grace period until 2024 is discussed by the Association of European Businesses.

According to analysts, the introduction of the import privilege stimulated the growth of the electric vehicle market last year by more than 1.5 times – from 3.5 thousand cars imported in 2019 to almost 6 thousand. And if now, when importing electric cars, you have to pay again 15% of its customs value, this can lead to market stagnation and slowdown in infrastructure development. Nissan is also confident that the zero rate of duties on electric vehicles is necessary for the development of this market in the Russian Federation, especially in the light of the government’s plans to electrify the country’s car fleet. The Japanese auto giant argues that due to the short-term effect of the incentives, automakers simply did not have time to adapt their plans to launch sales of electric vehicles in the country.
