In Russia, they are preparing a light laptop on domestic processors. It will cost up to 100,000 rubles

The Promobit company (Bitblaze brand), which has been developing a domestic laptop for a year now, has received a prototype that will run on the Elbrus-2S3 and Baikal-M processors. The key feature of this laptop in the segment of domestic solutions will be its weight (expected from 1.5 to 2.5 kg) – now completely Russian laptops are used by the military, and the weight of such devices is 5 kg. This was reported by Izvestia.

Since 2022, computers and servers can be considered domestic not only if they are made in Russia, but also if they run on a domestic processor. However, for laptops, this definition is already being rolled out. However, the upcoming device will also receive a motherboard and case designed in Russia – other key components in the form of RAM, motherboard connectors and LCD screens are produced only abroad.

The future laptop will be available in modifications with the Elbrus-2S3 and Baikal-M processors, which will differ from each other functionally. Both models will allow you to work and watch high-quality video in parallel, but only the model on Elbrus will cope with 4K-resolution in such conditions. Moreover, thanks to the binary translation mode, this version of the laptop will be able to run both native programs and applications for Intel processors – if desired, Windows can be installed on the model with Elbrus. It is assumed that the pre-installed operating system will be either AstraLinux or Basalt.

Now the main problem of the prototype received (with a plastic case and on “Baikal”) is autonomy – the laptop works only 2 hours from the built-in battery. The reason lies in the fact that at the moment Russian processors do not support the power-saving function – their clock frequency is fixed, and they work at full capacity even with non-resource-intensive tasks. The developers expect that after revision the laptop will be able to keep the charge at the level of four hours.

The novelty will receive a case from a silver aluminum bottom and a black lid, but since aluminum lends itself to anodizing (creating an oxide film on the surface), in the future, the silver color will be changed to another. Promobit claims that the price of a laptop should not exceed 100,000 rubles. The first thousand laptops are expected to be released in early 2022. Maxim Gorshenin, head of the business development projects department at MCST JSC (developer of Elbrus processors), is sure that this is “the first honest Russian laptop, a real import substitution”. According to him, the future novelty will be able to be used in schools, offices and government agencies as a full replacement for gadgets of well-known brands.
