Social networks in Russia can force you to install visitor counters. This proposal was made by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, or, more simply, Roskomnadzor.
According to the portal vc.ru with reference to the draft of a new document published on the website of draft regulations, Roskomnadzor proposes to oblige social networks operating in Russia to build in special counters to count the number of visitors. Moreover, this should only be software approved by the regulator. Thus, Roskomnadzor will be able to determine whether a specific Internet service is subject to the law on self-identification and removal of prohibited content. The fact is that on February 1, 2021, a law entered into force in Russia obliging Internet resources with more than 500 thousand visitors per day to independently block prohibited information and provide an annual report on the removal of such content.
It is noted that information about the counters offered by Roskomnadzor will be posted on the agency’s website. This software will count the number of single calls by unique users on the territory of the country to the information resource during the day. If it is not possible to determine the number of visits using the proposed counter, the site owner will have to send the necessary information upon request.
