Spain’s Ministry of Health announced today the first death due to complications from monkeypox. It should be noted that this is the first death in Europe and only the second outside of Africa in this year’s disease outbreak.
Earlier today, Brazil’s Ministry of Health announced the death of a 41-year-old man with underlying illnesses due to complications from monkeypox.
According to the World Health Organization, as of July 22, only five deaths had been reported worldwide, all on the African continent. The WHO has declared a global public health emergency, the highest level of alert.
A spokesman for Spain’s health ministry declined to release details of the patient who died. The latest report by the health authorities spoke of 4,298 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Spain, of which 120 patients had to be hospitalized.
