In the Darsena in Milan, the installation so as not to forget: an overturned ship and arms asking to be saved

«Reaching out to migrants is a duty, because the arms that emerge from the water are people fighting for their lives, men, women and children that indifference and ideological measures against rescues at sea risk transforming into dead bodies, to fill that enormous cemetery that it is now the Mediterranean Sea.” With these words ofThe President of Municipality 6 of Milan, Sandro Minniti, was inaugurated in Darsena the work created for National day in memory of the victims of immigration on 3 October.

The work is simple and powerful: the keel of an overturned ship and arms coming out of the water looking for help, they also ask us passersby to be saved. Around it, floating flush with the surface, are 368 chrysanthemums in memory of the 368 migrants who died in front of the waters of Lampedusa on 3 October 10 years ago. That day Pope Francis spoke of «Shame». But that shame is still on our shoulders: the deaths at sea continue to be counted and the work at the Darsena wants to remember them precisely against indifference. «We have decided to bring this drama into the daily lives of the Milanese because we cannot allow the awareness that, behind the numbers, there are stories and broken hopes to fade», continued President Minniti.

The work was produced and created by the Kineticvibe company with the contribution of the Italian-Argentine artist Emiliano Rubinaccithe ArtDirector Beppe «Treccia» Iavicolithe designer Matteo Rossi with the calligraphic contribution of Giuseppe Gep Caserta. It is a work created so that no one can turn away, says one of the artists, because “each of us is called into question”.
