In the Far East, the first criminal case was initiated on the theft of electricity for mining

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Khabarovsk Territory announced the opening of the first criminal case on the theft of electricity for cryptocurrency mining. The damage from illegal mining activities is estimated at 2.7 million rubles.

On the official website of the department, it is reported that a 32-year-old resident of the Khabarovsk Territory mined cryptocurrencies for three months, and the equipment was illegally connected to a transformer substation. The mining farm was set up in the premises of a woodworking enterprise that belonged to his relative. The scale of the farm was quite impressive – law enforcement agencies confiscated about 220 mining devices.

According to investigators, the underground miner caused damage to the energy company in the amount of 2.75 million rubles. A criminal case was initiated against him under Part 2 of Art. 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Causing property damage by deceit or breach of trust.” The article provides for a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to five years. However, given that the miner paid all the damage, most likely, the court will show leniency towards the accused.

Recall that in Russia there can be up to 100,000 underground miners, and the energy consumption of their farms can reach 500-700 MW.
