The mobile video card Radeon RX 6800M, according to AMD, should be faster than the mobile GeForce RTX 3080. However, as we know, with reservations. Today we have the opportunity to get acquainted with one of the first tests of the RX 6800M. And at the same time, learn about a couple of problems that the buyer of a gaming laptop may face.

For the tests, we took an ASUS Strix G15 laptop with a Radeon RX 6800M and Ryzen 9 5900HX. And the first results were disappointing. AMD’s new product performed worse than the RTX 3070, and sometimes even lagged behind the 115-watt RTX 2060, dropping to the level of the GTX 1660 Ti!

However, it turned out that the video card was not at all to blame for the failed result, but Asus. The video with additional tests on the author’s channel has not yet been released, but we have one screenshot that clarifies everything.

As you can see, the situation changes significantly due to two factors: RAM and external display. The bottom line is that this laptop has RAM with high timings. Replacing with RAM with normal timings, as we can see, gives a noticeable performance gain. The same situation exists with the fresh Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with GeForce RTX 3070.
As for the external screen, as it turned out, the signal from the discrete video card of the new Asus goes through the integrated APU, which greatly reduces the performance. Connecting an external shield makes the signal go directly from the RX 6800M without loss.
As a result, these manipulations lead to an increase in productivity by 30%! This already makes AMD’s new product comparable to the RTX 3080.
Unfortunately, it is simply impossible to understand in advance what kind of RAM you are buying a laptop with. And replacing the RAM will cost a lot. And connecting an external monitor to a laptop will simply not be considered by many as a solution to the problem, besides, if you do not have one, you also need to buy a monitor.
In general, the situation is not happy. The example of the mentioned Lenovo laptop shows that the problem occurs and affects different manufacturers, but it is not yet clear how widespread it is.
