In the future the world will depend more and more on technology (and on us)

That technology is an essential element of our lives is taken for granted but how our relationship with innovation will evolve is a less trivial matter. For Italians, technology must essentially do one thing: improve the world we live in. As? Making it more sustainable, safe, accessible and fair.

This is what emerges from a recent research conducted by Politecnico di Milano commissioned by Samsung that crosses the finish line of its own first thirty years of presence in our country. Thanks also to the contribution of the Korean company, innovation has not only evolved considerably in recent decades, but has managed to respond in a more tangible way to real needs of people.

The Italians recognize a growing and central role of new technologies to face the challenges of our times. In fact, according to the Polimi survey, 62% of the sample consider that digital technology can contribute to the reduction of environmental impact, 49% consider it an engine of social progress and 47% a tool for reducing inequalities and promoting a more inclusive and fair society.

But the task of a better future lies with changing our habits. It is therefore not surprising that the “smart home” is being considered the place to start to reduce their impact on the environment: 54% of respondents associate the smart home with the possibility of controlling and reducing consumption, 37% believe that, thanks to a connected home, it is possible to make their life home more sustainable.

Another key sector is education and training. The compatriots hope for a radical change in future didactic scenarios: for example 30% of the sample imagine a didactics where augmented reality will allow them to follow fully immersive and interactive classroom or remote lessons. Such an innovative use of these technologies could also become an excellent driving force for exciting young people to study of STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), disciplines that are increasingly important for the world of work.

The study also highlights how new technologies are increasingly associated with improved life expectancy thanks to the tools that monitor health. The issue of personal safety is also fundamental: the presence of solutions for monitoring dangerous situations and intelligent cameras are considered interesting by respectively 81% and 76% of the interviewees.

The role of connectivity will be central, an essential enabling factor to encourage the adoption of remote health monitoring systems, but also to make our homes increasingly intelligent and allow activities that are now considered essential such as smart working.

In this scenario, it becomes the role of tech companies is crucial in being promoters of change and accompanying people towards the future. The research highlights the expectations of Italians in this sense: to improve the quality of life and our future, it is considered necessary for technology companies to put sustainability, training and greater accessibility of technology at the center of their strategy.

In short, the future it depends on us all, certainly from companies like Samsung that design and implement innovation, but also and above all from our behavior with an increasingly aware and advanced use of technology.
