The infectologist Marco Aurélio Sáfadi, president of the Department of Infectology of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP), explained, this Tuesday (4), in an interview with CNN, that in the future it will be necessary to boost the vaccine against Covid-19 for children, depending on the scenario of the pandemic at the time.
“After a few months, usually six months later, there is a major loss of protection. With Covid-19 vaccines, at least with these first generation vaccines, this phenomenon is very well established. It manifests itself first for protection in the forms of Covid-19 and even for infection. But it does not affect protection against severe forms of the disease, which is very important for cellular immunity”
“It is to be expected that there will be a need for revaccinations. What is not yet clear is how often these revaccinations will be needed. Regarding children, we imagine that once there is a future epidemiological context similar to the one at the moment, with variants circulating, hospitalizations occurring, there will be a need for revaccination, including in the pediatric population.”
In almost one hundred thousand contributions in the public consultation of the Ministry of Health to discuss vaccination in children between 5 and 11 years old, the majority of votes were against the medical prescription for the immunization of the age group, initially defended by the folder.
However, there were demonstrations by people against the vaccine for children. One of the group’s arguments would be the existence of serious adverse events.
Sáfadi, who participated in the consultation, explains that “it was a unique opportunity for teaching and providing adequate information for some individuals who are not in the field of pediatrics and infectology and who were not absolutely informed about the characteristics of Covid-19 in pediatric groups, in relation to the performance of these vaccines in the studies that preceded the authorization for use and in the real world”.
