In The Idol Lily-Rose Depp becomes an unscrupulous pop star (and there is also Vanity Fair)

There is a bit of Vanity Fair in the series The Idol with Lily-Rose Depp, from June 5 on Sky and NOW and previewed at the Cannes Film Festival. Something like this also happened at the beginning of Call my agent – Italy (but in that case the interviewee was Paola Cortellesi). The dynamics are similar: Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is a pop star trying to get back on the crest of the wave focusing on sensuality and sexuality. She still hasn’t recovered from her mother’s mourning but she is constantly followed by the reporter of Vanity Fair, or how she is supposed to be a correspondent of the newspaper in this project that aims to shock and scandalize. With a fiery red bob and an attitude between competitive and confidential with the singer, she is a bit of a parody of that press who wants to be at the center of the story she tells to steal a few minutes of celebrity from whoever is in front of her. And for insiders who understand the sarcastic note it really makes you smile.

The reason the media is all on Jocelyn is because news of a breakdown sells and she seems to have lost her mind and sense of boundaries. Always walking around half-naked, it’s as if she were playing a part in life too. Her large entourage maneuvers her to make money but Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria and the deus ex machina of the project, denies any reference to Britney. Even if Mrs. Spears is mentioned all right in the Lolita-like attitudes of the protagonist.

On one of her wild evenings in a club, she meets the manager, Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), and she – like a moth attracted to the light – cannot resist this alleged erotic charge that man releases, mixed with a sense of veiled danger.

According to the first two episodes, Jocelyn convinces herself that she can soar on her own again and, spurred on by this mysterious dude, she begins to disobey her art team to go her own way, with questionable results.

Lily-Rose Depp is thrilled at the idea of unleashing all her seductive power and underlines it in her meeting with the press: «This project means everything to me, it’s something special that made me feel at home, in the family».

If she says so, we have to believe her, despite the rumors about a set full of tensions.

The daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis she doesn’t like being called nepo baby and throws a veiled dig at her parents saying that to stay grounded, all you need to do is “choose the right people”.

While the music bombards the viewer, the images sometimes seem grainy, almost stolen to reiterate the concept of a red light scoop. Or at least it tries.
