In the middle of summer, residents of the municipalities of Brejo da Madre de Deus and Pedra, in Agreste de Pernambuco, were surprised by a hailstorm that fell on Tuesday (21).
The phenomenon, rare for the region, was recorded on videos by several people, who quickly shared the images on social media. The situation was confirmed by the Pernambuco Water and Climate Agency (Apac).
Despite being an infrequent event, hailstorms can occur between the months of January and May in the region, according to Apac.
According to meteorologist at the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) Morgana Almeida, the phenomenon occurs due to the formation of clouds of great vertical extent, known as cumulonimbus.
These clouds, which can reach very high altitudes, are responsible for the formation of hail. Inside them, strong wind currents push the water droplets to the top, where the temperature is extremely low, solidifying the water droplets.
“When the ice becomes heavy and breaks gravity, it precipitates, that is, it rains,” explained Morgana. She also highlighted that, in summer, with increased humidity and heat, the conditions for the formation of these clouds become more favorable.
