In the State of the Union, Biden promises to restore the right to abortion and talks about the risk to democracy

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, promised to restore the law that regulated abortion in the United States during his 2024 State of the Union address this Thursday (7).

A group in the audience wore white, as a protest for women's rights.

Biden began his speech by stating that the country is facing “unprecedented times”, pointing out that democracy is under attack both internally and abroad.

He cited the war in Ukraine, noting that “if anyone in this room thinks that Putin [presidente da Rússia] will end up in Ukraine, I assure you he won’t.”

He then stated that Ukrainians can “stop Putin” if the US stands by their side and provides weapons. At the same time, he said he was determined not to send American soldiers to war in Europe.

“My message to Putin is simple: we will not go away, we will not bow down,” warned Biden.

The Democrat then celebrated the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO, the Western military alliance. The Swedish Prime Minister was present at the Capitol to hear the speech.

“Making the rich pay their fair share”

After talking about his government's economic achievements, Joe Biden highlighted that it is necessary to make “the rich pay their fair share”, proposing a tax on 25% for billionaires.

The president also said he would increase the minimum company tax to 21%.

Criticism of Trump and attack on the Capitol

The President of the United States also criticized Donald Trump, who is almost certain to be his opponent in November's presidential election.

In addition to citing the Republican's statement that he would let Russia do “whatever it wants” against NATO allies that are not fulfilling their obligations, he recalled the attack on the US Congress, on January 6, 2021.

He pointed out that Trump wants to bury the truth about the case and that “you can't just love your country when you win”.

state of the Union

The State of the Union speech takes place every year, an opportunity in which the incumbent president speaks to Congress and citizens, highlighting the achievements of his government and the policies he is implementing or wants to implement.

However, this year's speech also gains important weight with the electoral campaign.

After the Super Tuesday primaries, last Tuesday (5), in which Biden and Donald Trump achieved significant victories, it is almost certain that November will be a rematch of the 2020 election between the two candidates.
