The United States Attorney’s Office announced the liquidation of the SSNDOB trading platform, which sold the personal data of 24 million Americans for cryptocurrencies over several years.
Ministry of Justice explainedthat, in addition to the SSNDOB marketplace, a number of websites have been shut down where, for years, attackers have been selling names, dates of birth, and social security numbers belonging to US citizens.
In total, the criminals earned more than $19 million in cryptocurrency, law enforcement officials say. The investigation revealed that SSNDOB administrators created advertisements for marketplace services on criminal dark web forums, provided a customer support function, and regularly monitored when and how buyers deposited assets into their accounts.
The administrators used various methods to protect their anonymity and mask their activities, buying Internet servers in different countries and requiring buyers to use digital payment methods, such as bitcoins.
“The theft and misuse of personal information is not only a crime, but can have disastrous consequences for people for years to come,” US Attorney Roger Handberg said in a statement.
In May, a Washington court upheld a U.S. Justice Department indictment against a payment company founder who transferred digital assets to individuals from countries under sanctions.
