In the US in the state of Georgia, eight people were killed in three episodes of shooting in massage parlors in Atlanta and the suburbs, the Associated Press reported. A suspect has been detained.
The attacks began yesterday, March 16, at about 17:00 local time (23:00 in Kiev). The victims were five people in a massage parlor in a shopping center in Acworth, about 50 km north of Atlanta. Two people died on the spot, of the three hospitalized, two later died in the hospital.
At about 5:50 pm, police called a massage parlor in Atlanta, where three women were found shot. At the same time, there was a report of shooting at a massage parlor across the street, where a murdered woman was also found.
All of the victims were believed to be Asian, according to Atlanta Police Chief Rodney Bryant.
Woodstock’s 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long, a 21-year-old suspect in the Akworth shooting, was caught on CCTV footage minutes before the attack, police said. He was later arrested in Crisp County, about 240 km from Atlanta. Police believe he was also responsible for the shooting in Atlanta – his car was in the area of the attacked cabins during the attacks.
The killings come amid a recent wave of attacks on Asian Americans that coincided with the spread of the coronavirus in the United States, AP notes.
