In the women's prisons of Rome, Pope Francis

Pope Francis is going to go to Rome's women's prison, Rebibia, in a little while, for the Niptiros Ceremony. It had been decided that the pope would symbolically wash the feet of twelve female prisoners. Due to the state of his health, however (with increasing difficulty in walking), it was finally decided that Francis would attend the Catholic Holy Thursday ceremony, but that, at the time of the washing, two cardinals would replace him. Since 2016, with a reform that Pope Francis himself wanted, it became possible for women to participate in this ceremony. Last year, the pontiff had visited Rome's juvenile prison, “Cazale Del Marmo.” With the Ceremony of the Washbasin, emphasis is placed on the humility of Jesus, who, the day before the Crucifixion, chose to wash the feet of his Apostles.
