For every villain, there is always an origin story. Brian Tyree Henry 42, took that motto to heart when voicing the robot D-16 (or Megatron) in “Transformers: The Origin “.
In an interview with CNN, the Oscar nominated actor for “Passagem” revealed what intrigued him most about the character’s trajectory, whose relationship with the robot Optimus, voiced by Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”), Prime undergoes a 180º turnaround in the new animation: “I really wanted to show a lot of heart in the character . Whenever we see Megatron, he is portrayed as very dark, evil and aggressive.”
“Seeing a friendship develop with a young Optimus Prime and doing things for each other, was something I wanted to explore,” he said. According to the actor, the complexity of the villain is something that viewers need to see.
“Often, we don’t have the story of how villains are made because they are made—I don’t believe they start out that way. Show that heart and the origin behind Megatron It was something I really wanted to bring to the character,” he concludes.
In “Transformers: Origin,” audiences will be able to see for the first time the transformation of D-16 into the fearsome Megatron and Orion Pax into the legendary Optimus Prime. The plot takes place in an early phase of the characters’ lives, before they arrive on Earth, and is presented in animated format, without the presence of human characters.
In addition to Bryan and Hemsworth, the voice cast includes Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”), Keegan-Michael Key (“Key & Peele”), Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”), Laurence Fishburne (“Matrix”) and Steve Buscemi (“Boarwalk Empire”).
The feature film hits theaters this Thursday (26).
