With the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt ÇavuşoλοluIranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met in Istanbul today after weeks of tension between the two countries.
The two ministers “talked about bilateral relations, about Syria, for the fight against terrorism and for Afghanistan“, As announced by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and broadcasts AMPE.
Zarif and Tsavousoglu also discussed “the means of developing trade relations between their two countries,” according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry.
This meeting took place while the tensions between Turkey and Iran, two rival forces with complicated relations, which support opposing camps in the Syrian conflict, have deteriorated in recent weeks.
Last month Turkey strongly criticized Iran after Tehran denounced the presence of Turkish troops in northern Iraq. And in early February, Turkey announced that it had arrested an Iranian consular official as part of an investigation into the murder of an Iranian dissident in 2019 in Istanbul.
The meeting between Tsavousoglou and Zarif is also taking place at the moment Turkey prepares to host trans-Afghan peace talks in Istanbul. Iran is a major foreign player in Afghanistan, a country it borders.
Zarif was to be received today by the President of Turkey Tayyip Erdogan.
