The Amazonas Fire Department reports that it fought 4,276 fires between June 3 and August 4 this year.
The action plan for the so-called Aceiro operation, which is in its second phase, has intensified operational work to combat fires by sending military personnel, vehicles and equipment to municipalities with the most fire incidents.
According to the general commander of the Fire Department, Colonel Alexandre Freitas, the work will continue throughout the Amazon summer, which is the period of the year with the greatest demand for fire outbreaks due to the high temperatures.
“Since June 3, our troops have been operating in the interior of the state through Operation Aceiro. We are in the second phase of the mission, and at this moment our greatest demand is in the southern region of Amazonas, known as Arco do Fogo. With Aceiro, firefighters are fighting fires and also raising awareness,” highlighted Colonel Alexandre Freitas.
According to data from the Fire Department’s Situation Room, so far, the three municipalities with the most fires fought by the corporation are Boca do Acre (915 fires), Manicoré (778 fires) and Humaitá (734 fires).
Currently, the Operation is made up of more than 300 agents, including firefighters, brigade members and men from the National Force.
In addition to the operational work of fighting fires, the teams also work to raise awareness among the population in the countryside to prevent fires. Since June, the teams sent on the mission have been giving lectures in public schools in the municipalities and promoting training in rural and riverside communities, teaching techniques for managing planting without the use of fire and the correct way to create firebreaks on properties.
