The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, is in Ukraine for talks with high-ranking government officials to ensure the safety of the country’s nuclear facilities, the UN agency announced today.
“This conflict is already causing unimaginable human suffering and destruction,” Grossi said in a statement, noting that “the IAEA’s expertise and capabilities are needed to prevent this (conflict) from also leading to a nuclear accident.”
“The military conflict poses an unprecedented threat to the country’s nuclear power plants and other facilities. We must take urgent action to ensure that they continue to operate in complete safety and reduce the risk of an accident,” he added. IAEA in its announcement.
Grossi will also visit one of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants this week.
The IAEA chief is expected to give a press conference when he returns to Vienna later this week.
