In Vietnam, Lula discusses aviation agreement, beef and summit of the BRICS

The president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), said on Friday (28) that Vietnam can buy Embraer aircraft and become a regional center for Brazilian meat processing operations.

Lula’s lines took place during a meeting with Vietnam President Luong Luong in Hanoi.

The petista also recognized the country as a market economy, invited Vietnam to participate in a BRICS summit in Brazil later this year and promised a Mercosur trade agreement with Hanoi.

Lula’s second visit to Vietnam occurs when Hanoi, under pressure from the Trump administration to reduce his commercial surplus, promised to increase US imports, including agricultural products such as soy, of which Brazil is one of the main exporters for the country.

Meat market

At a news conference with Lula, Cuong said Vietnam was “seriously considering” allowing the entry of Brazilian beef into the country.

“Open the Vietnamese market for Brazilian beef would attract investments from Brazilian refrigerators to make this country an export platform for Southeast Asia,” said Lula.

JBS is considering building a meat processing factory in northern Vietnam, the first in Asia, if Vietnam opens its market for Brazilian beef, Reuters said last week, citing sources.

Embraer

Lula also said he was aware that aviation company Vietnam Airlines was “positively evaluating Embraer’s offer” to regional jets, noting that Brazil wanted to export airplanes to Hanoi.

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer is in negotiations for the possible sale of ten e190 jets to Vietnam Airlines, a Brazilian authority told Reuters last week. The two companies did not comment.

Embraer and JBS are part of the business delegation that accompanies Lula on his trip to Vietnam.

Action Plans and Brics

The two countries signed a five -year action plan, which authorities said they focus on defense, agriculture, energy and technology, and other pacts, including one on football cooperation.

Lula invited Vietnam to the BRICS summit that Brazil will host in July.

Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh participated in a BRICS summit as an observer for the first time last year, but Hanoi has not accepted the invitation to become a formal partner of Brazil led, Russia, China and South Africa.

Cuong made no comment on the BRICS in his public statement.

Lula said that the Brazilian Mercosur presidency in the second half of the year will seek “a balanced agreement with Vietnam”, which implies that there will be negotiations on a trade agreement between Vietnam and the South American block.

He also proposed to expand technical cooperation with Vietnam in coffee plantations at a time when the two largest coffee producers in the world are facing challenges of climate change.
