In West Bank, Biden vows to maintain peace efforts between Israel and Palestine

US President Joe Biden pledged on Friday to continue efforts to support a just solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, although the goal of a two-state solution seems distant.

Speaking alongside Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem, Biden said the United States would not give up on the goal of a fair settlement for the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

“Even if the ground is not suitable at this time to restart negotiations, the United States and my government will not give up on trying to bring Palestinians, Israelis and both sides closer together.”

Opportunity for conflict resolution

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday there was a narrow window for a two-state solution to resolve the conflict.

“The opportunity for a two-state solution on the 1967 borders may be available today and may not remain for long,” Abbas said after meeting with President Joe Biden.

Abbas also called for US support to hold accountable the killers of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, killed during an Israeli attack in the West Bank city of Jenin on May 11.
